Today, a growing number of African governments, educational  institutions and international development agencies  recognize that local level knowledge and organizations provide the foundation for participatory approaches to development that are both cost-effective and sustainable. During the past decade, a rapidly growing set of evidence indicates a strong relationship between AIKS and sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa.
